It depends on whether it’s real or faux...
Real patent leather is made of fine high quality leather coated with a shiny finish that’s a blend of polyurethane and acrylic. But the term “patent” is also used to describe synthetic leathers made of plastic, polyurethane or polyvinyl chloride (PVC) that have a similar shiny finish. So the first thing to consider is which type of coating it has. Nadine Pouliot, public relations coordinator for the Aldo Group, cautions against home remedies (like sprucing it up with beer or vinegar) and instead suggests investing in quality cleaning products. She recommends trying a gentle foaming cleanser like Leather Lather ($9.99) or Synthetic Spray and Shine ($4.99) for faux leather, both available at Aldo boutiques. Also, bear in mind that a protective spray is not recommended, as it may dull the finish on this already waterproof material.
