When it’s time for a new hairstyle, it’s important for the cut and length to fit the shape of your face and your own personal style. Here are some tricks to finding the right ‘do for you.

Those with round faces should keep their locks relatively long, mid-neck or longer, recommends Liette Bélanger, stylist and owner of Funky Toque hair salon in Montreal. It’s also important to create height on top, to lengthen the face. Fullness on the sides will have the opposite effect and make your face appear shorter.

As for long, slender faces, blunt (equal length) cuts can be very interesting. Try an ear-length haircut with more volume on the sides to make your face look fuller. Bangs will shorten the length of your face and add an element of softness.

If you have curly hair, you know the wrong style can leave you looking like a disco ball from Saturday Night Fever. Liette Bélanger’s advice is to play with different lengths and angles. Ask your stylist to “undercut” your hair, meaning to cut the layers shorter underneath and leave the outer layers longer.

If your hair is fine and pin-straight, it’s important not to cut above the middle of your ear. So you might want to opt for a trendy bob cut just below the ears to give your hair more bounce and volume.

One last word of advice: mature women are advised to stay away from shaved heads and very short styles. It’s all about sophistication and femininity for you, ladies.
